Where and when to see the northern lights without wasting a week

The Kp index alone can't tell you whether to go outside. Here are the four conditions needed to see the northern lights, and the season with the best odds.

There is one sentence you read everywhere that ruins a lot of trips: “you need a high Kp”. It is true, and it is nowhere near enough. I once spent a week under a Kp 6 and saw nothing, because there was unbroken stratus above my head for seven nights.

Seeing the northern lights takes four conditions at the same time. Miss one and there is no show, whatever the other three are doing.

To see the northern lights you need four conditions

1. A clear sky. This is the first one, by a long way. An aurora happens around 100 kilometres up, which is above every cloud. Overcast cancels everything. It is also the only condition you can act on that same evening, by driving thirty kilometres.

2. Darkness. Not night in the calendar sense, but a sun far enough below the horizon. In practice it needs to be at least ten to twelve degrees down. That is why you see nothing in June above the Arctic Circle: it never gets dark enough.

3. Geomagnetic activity. This is the famous Kp, or better, the Hp30 index, which is computed every thirty minutes rather than every three hours. At a latitude like Tromsø’s, a Kp 2 or 3 is plenty. In Brittany you need a Kp 7, which happens a handful of nights a year.

4. The Moon. A full moon high in the sky washes out weak auroras. It doesn’t prevent them, it makes them less visible. It is the one parameter you can plan months ahead, and almost nobody does.

When to go

The useful season runs from late August to early April. Activity peaks around the equinoxes, in September and March, for a physical reason to do with how Earth’s magnetic field is oriented relative to the solar wind.

September and March have another advantage that gets mentioned less often: they are far less cold than January, and a night spent waiting outside at minus twenty-five rarely ends well.

Within the night, the likeliest window runs from 9 pm to 2 am, peaking around magnetic midnight.

Where to go

The criterion isn’t raw latitude, it is magnetic latitude, and above all local weather.

  • Tromsø and northern Norway. Well placed, but very cloudy: the ocean is right there. Go with a car so you can drive away from the clouds.
  • Abisko, in Sweden. The famous blue hole: the mountains block part of the weather coming from the west. Statistically the best compromise in Europe.
  • Rovaniemi and Finnish Lapland. A little further south, so you need a little more activity, but clearer skies more often and easier access.
  • Iceland. Spectacular, and the most temperamental weather on this list.

And away from town lights, always. A street lamp a hundred metres away costs you more than a point of Kp.

The mistake that costs the most nights

Looking at a single number and deducing a decision from it. Kp is a planetary index computed over three hours: it knows nothing about your clouds, your Moon, or your latitude. A Kp 7 under a closed sky gives you nothing, and a quiet night with the Moon down and a clear sky can perfectly well produce a visible green arc.

What to actually expect

A weak aurora, to the naked eye, is a grey haze. The green really only appears above a certain intensity, because the human eye handles colour badly in low light. A camera sees it before you do.

If you see a still grey band to the north and you’re unsure, take a three second exposure. If it comes out green, stay outside.
